A Mediterranean location shoot: flights for the model (often long-haul), photographer, stylist, MUA, assistants, producer. Hotel nights. Studio electricity. Travel to/from the location. Wardrobe shipment. Props production, often single-use. Total CO2 typically 5 to 20 tonnes per major shoot.
The AI shoot footprint
Cloud GPU electricity for generation. Small electricity footprint for reviewers and retouchers. No travel. No shipping of wardrobe for the shoot itself. Typical compute cost per major shoot: grams to kilograms of CO2 equivalent, depending on model and volume. Orders of magnitude lower than travel.
Production waste comparison
Traditional shoots generate waste: single-use props, catering, wardrobe dry-cleaning, transport fuel. AI shoots generate compute and electricity. Net waste footprint: dramatically lower for AI.
The model welfare and labor angle
Traditional shoots also have human labor considerations — model fatigue, long studio days, travel impact on crew. AI shoots have none of these. The labor picture shifts from on-set crew to digital creative teams.
Sustainability marketing claims
Brands claiming sustainability benefits from AI photography should do so cautiously and substantively. Quantify the travel and materials saved. Avoid generic greenwashing. The real number is defensible; inflated claims are not.
